The High-Tech Industry at the Forefront of Achieving Net Zero: TCP Kicks Off 'COP29: Strengthening Climate Action' Online Forum Series
2024-11-21
As the Conference of the Parties (COP29) enters final negotiation phase, the Taiwan Climate Partnership, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, hosted an online forum to discuss the crucial role of the high-tech industry in driving net-zero emissions. This event marked the beginning of Taiwan's 'COP29 Enhancing Ambition and Enabling Action' series, focusing on the theme of ‘The High-Tech Industry at the Forefront of Achieving Net Zero.'
The forum invited Lite-On Technology, a representative of Taiwan's high-tech industry, to share practical experience in digital technology and sustainable strategies. Also, a number of international experts participated remotely, focusing on cross-border cooperation and model learning. The forum brought together nearly 400 participants, including corporate representatives, sustainability advocates, and government officials, online and offline. It demonstrates Taiwan’s determination to take climate action.
Hosted by Alan Lin, Secretary-General of the Taiwan Climate Partnership, the event featured four distinguished speakers who delved into the leadership role of the high-tech sector in the transition to a net-zero economy. Luis Neves, CEO of the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), emphasized the transformative power of digital technologies in driving sustainability. "The high-tech industry faces both challenges and opportunities," Mr. Neves said. "Through cross-sector collaboration and technological innovation, we can achieve more impactful climate action."
Veronika Thieme, Head of Delivery - Europe at Carbon Trust, highlighted the importance of accurate Scope 3 emissions accounting for businesses, particularly in the electronics industry. She stressed the need for stronger supply chain collaboration to develop reliable carbon emission models and meet increasingly stringent Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Mousumi Bhat, Vice President of Global Sustainability Programs at SEMI, discussed how the semiconductor industry can leverage digital technologies and energy solutions to build more resilient and sustainable supply chains.
As the sole Taiwanese industry representative, Peter Chen, Director of Corporate Sustainability Development Center at Lite-On Technology, shared the company's efforts to strengthen carbon cost management and reduce climate risks. Lite-On has successfully transformed its technological capabilities into a core development strategy.
During the panel discussion, speakers explored the challenges and opportunities brought by the upcoming round of NDCs and the role of the high-tech industry in engaging with stakeholders.
Luis Neves emphasized the growing importance of the high-tech sector in global decarbonization efforts, highlighting Taiwan's potential to become a leader in the global net-zero. Mousumi Bhat noted that while clean energy can effectively power the semiconductor supply chain, there is a significant gap between renewable energy supply and demand in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Taiwan Climate Partnership will continue to host online forums on topics such as 'Urban Innovation in Adaptation and Disaster Response.' Also, the Ministry of Environment host the topic on 'Green Growth', 'Carbon Pricing and International Cooperation', fostering cross-sector collaboration and driving Taiwan's climate action forward.
